Post image for We’ve Been Busy at TypingWeb – Tons of New Features Now Live!

Teachers, in preparation for the 2012-2013 school year, we are making improvements to the typing tutor and Teacher Portal. Our goal is to provide you with the features you want and tools you need to effectively teach and manage your students. Here is a list of the most recent updates.

In the typing tutor:

Trophy Case

Students now earn trophies for every typing lesson they complete, filling their trophy case, and motivating them to spend more time typing and learning. This feature has been up for a couple weeks, and our statistics show students now spend an extra 15-20% more time typing.

New Typing Games

We have completely overhauled the Games section of the typing tutor, removing all non-typing games, and adding 6 new killer titles which even allow the student to choose between different word lists and skill levels.

Class Scoreboard

The class scoreboard allows students to view the weekly performance of their classmates and compete with one another for ranking. By competing, students are driven to type longer and faster. Note that you can choose to disable the scoreboard within your Teacher Portal account.

iPad Support

The wait is over; TypingWeb.com can now be used on the iPad! Students can complete typing lessons with a wireless keyboard for a true touch typing experience or use the convenient on-screen keyboard.

In the Teacher Portal:

Group Students into Classes

It is now possible to organize your students into classes, giving you the ability to manage and report on student progress much more efficiently.

Viewing Options in the Student Radar

In response to your feedback about the newly launched Student Radar, we have added the ability to view offline students as well, allowing you to see both who is and isn’t using TypingWeb.

Import Your Entire Student Roster

Creating student accounts just got a whole lot faster! You can now create multiple accounts at once with our simple import tool. No more having to create every account one by one. Visit the create student page to import your students.

Please fix!!! After a new key is introduced at the beginning of each lesson the screen automatically jumps to the next lesson when I hit continue without allowing me to complete the typing. I can’t do any individual lessons except the first and last using iPad with external keyboard. Love your site, but please make it work like it used to before the update!

Thank you for alerting us! I have passed this report on to our programmers so they can test and fix the problem. Thank you in advance for your patience while we investigate the potential bug :-)

Is there a way to disable the “clear statistics” button for the student users? This creates a problem because it clears the data of their tests from the teacher portal as well when they hit CLEAR!

Thanks for such an amazing, FREE website. We would not be able to teach typing with out it.

Reply

kristen August 8, 2012 at 10:19 am

Thanks for using our site in your classroom! Unfortunately, there is no way to disable the “clear statistics” button for students. I can see how that would be troublesome if a student accidentally cleared their information since there is no way to recover it. I will pass your suggestion onto our programmers and see if it is something that can be added to the site in the future!

Hello all,

I am a 1st year teacher and I will be implementing this great program for my 5th grade keyboarding class. I just wanted to know (based on your previous experience) how long it typically would take students to complete a lesson? It would be great to get an idea in preparing a schedule. The class is around 9 weeks long.

Thanks!

Reply

kristen August 8, 2012 at 10:26 am

I am going to post your question to our Facebook page and see if I can get some good feedback for you on how long it takes a 5th grade student to complete a lesson. From teachers a I have talked to, they typically have their kids type for no more than 30 minutes at a time. If they choose to go longer they use the extra time playing typing games. Let’s face it, typing can get a bit monotonous after a while! :-) It’s good to break the lessons up into frequent shorter periods rather than stretching them out to a few long periods.

Or can we just log-in with same registration from last year?

Reply

You can log in with the same registration from last year. No need to re-enroll the same students.

Reply

Sara August 31, 2012 at 12:08 pm

Is it possible for students to be switched to a different teacher so that those moving from grade 4 to 5 can keep their accounts from last year? Also, can we clear their records so that they start at the beginning again this fall and have a fresh start? Please advise. Thanks!

Reply

kristen August 31, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Sara- Yes the new teacher can use the “Link Existing Student” feature to move the student from one portal to another as long as he/she has the username and password. This way the students will be able to keep their login information from last year. Resetting the progress/stats is also an available option in the teacher portal. However, it is important to note that it will clear all personal info associated with the account (i.e. first/last name & email address).

Hi TypingWeb,

I LOVE YOUR SITE! I began using it last year with my Keyboarding class and now my entire dept uses it. I am a teacher in New York State and currently NYS is modifying it’s teacher evaluation. We will be required to issue pre-assessments and post-assesements in each discipline we teach. I am hoping that I can utilize TypingWeb as an assessment tool. Are there any plans to incorporate “standards” or “goals” for our classes? Could we see class and individual data too?

Thanks :)

This school year will be the third year I’m using Typing Web with my students. Typing Web has been a great program for us. We really like the upgrades you made this summer. My students keep showing me their “trophies” in their cases based on the lessons they completed. ;-) Plus, they like the new typing games, and I appreciate all the games are now keyboarding related only. As a teacher, I am enjoying being about to group my students by class. Finally, the student radar screen has been a great addition. It’s especially helpful when we’re all in the computer lab together. I’ve let my students know about this tool so I can better monitor what they are doing. ;-) Thanks again for the upgrades.

On the Class Scoreboard, I have it enabled and such, my kids are typing, but it’s still empty. When do their scores show up there?

Reply

kristen September 6, 2012 at 12:27 pm

If it was previously disabled, and you just enabled it recently the scoreboard will start updating going forward. Stats are not stored when the scoreboard is set to “disabled”. The scoreboard resets itself every Sunday, and then the students will start to appear on it as they proceed through the typing lessons during the week. If you feel like it is not working properly, please contact us for more tech support http://www.typingweb.com/support/contact/

I love that they have the ability to take a lesson again. I make them score 95% in order to move on. It is great to upload and group in classes. Can I move a student from one class or ungrouped to another?
Thanks for providing an excellent free program!

Reply

Thank you for choosing TypingWeb this year! You can move a student into a new class from within your teacher portal account. Start by going to the Students tab. Check the box next to the username(s) you want to move, click the Change Classes button at the top of the page, select a class from the drop down menu and click Move Students. That’s it!

You can edit a username from within your teacher portal account or delete the entire thing. Start by going to the Students tab and either click the pencil next to the student name to edit the account information or click the red circle to delete the account in it’s entirety.

I am using Typing Web for the first time this year with 3rd-6th grade students. Do you have suggestions for the accuracy and wpm scores they should have to go on to another lesson?

Reply

kristen September 27, 2012 at 2:28 pm

It is important to focus on accuracy over speed at this point. I would recommend setting an accuracy minimum because speed will come in time but accuracy is a must from day one. Most teachers I speak to say that they set an 80%-90% accuracy minimum for younger typists and a 90%-95% for older typists. The course has a built in requirement of 70% accuracy, but even 3rd graders should not have a problem hitting that. Kids that age tend to range from 8-15 WPM (with some kids in 6th grade as high as 20 WPM).

Assuming an adult student scores 90-95% accuracy, what is the WPM standard that should be met before going on to each successive exercise?

Reply

kristen October 1, 2012 at 9:57 am

Hi,

I’m really not able to answer that question because it depends on so many other factors like, their starting speed, the amount of previous keyboarding experience, the level they are they on, etc. In general, a fast typist is typically above 55 WPM, an average typist is between 25-55 WPM.

Reply

dcleslie6xm3 September 30, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Is there any way to move back to a previous exercise within a lesson? It seems that once you “save and continue”, there’s no way to go back to a previous exercise within the lesson….other than going all the way back to the beginning of the lesson.

Reply

kristen October 1, 2012 at 9:53 am

Hi,

You are correct in your assumption. You can only redo an exercise by clicking the Retake button immediately after completing the exercise. Once you hit Save and Continue, you cannot go back without starting over.
