As a busy teacher, it is important to save time whenever possible. One way to do that, while creating accounts on TypingWeb, is to use the Student Import Tool. However, we find that many teachers pass on this time saving opportunity because they are not sure how the tool works and fear they will waste more time than they’ll save. We are happy to offer this detailed explanation on how to successfully use the Student Import Tool to help you create student accounts quickly.
Creating Your Spreadsheet
To import student accounts, you must start by creating the proper file. Create a list of usernames and passwords in a spreadsheet program (like Microsoft Excel). List the data in this order: username, password, first name, last name, email (note that only the username and password are required). Column A should contain the username, column B the password, column C the first name, and so on. Be careful not to include a space at the end of the username as this will result in an error when importing the file. Once the list is complete, save the file as a Comma Delimited (.CSV) file. Do not save it as the default .XLS version. For teachers that plan on grouping their students into classes, repeat this process and create separate files for each class. Note: Do not create multiple tabs within a single file.
To verify that you saved the file in the correct format, you can open it again and expect it to look like this.
Importing Your .CSV File
You are now ready to import your roster. First create the desired number of classes on the Classes tab (if you plan to group your students). Go to the Students tab and click the ‘Create New Students’ button, then click the ‘Go to Import Tool’ button. Browse for the .CSV file you just saved. Pick the desired class name from the drop down menu and click the ‘Begin Import’ button. A list of student usernames will appear quickly with green check marks next to them. If a red X appears next to a username, it is either already taken or does not meet the standard criteria (such as no spaces, no strange symbols). Go back to your .CSV file, edit the username appropriately and re-import the file. Once the red Xs have disappeared, click the ‘Create Students’ button and the new accounts will be added to your Students tab automatically. Repeat for all files and classes.
Usernames and Passwords
TypingWeb uses a shared set of usernames between all accounts. If you plan on using a common format with first and last names or initials, we suggest prefixing them with something unique such as a school name’s acronym, for example: ucla.ftwtest123. This will lessen the chance of the usernames being unavailable. Usernames must be a minimum of four characters long with a maximum of 30 characters, and can only contain letters, numbers, underscores ( _ ) and one period ( . ). Passwords are case sensitive and can be any character length. Passwords are encrypted for security and not available in plain text anywhere on the site. Keep a record of the passwords you assign to your students while creating their accounts.
Wasn’t that easy? We hope this step by step tutorial will encourage you to take advantage of the Student Import Tool to save valuable time.

I have not started with my classes yet, but I have heard good things about it. What would be great is if passwords could be generated for specialist teachers that have many classes. it would just save time. Just a suggestion =)
I’m not sure what you mean by passwords being generated for specialist teachers… Do you mean to say that you;d like the system to assign passwords as opposed to you making them up?
Yes, Kristen. I think that is what the OP was suggesting. I have seen other websites assign random passwords; however, I personally prefer to assign my own. As a technology specialist, myself, I am able to use the same usernames and passwords for my students on several websites. Our SIS (student information system) does a nice job of outputting usernames and passwords into a CSV file, which I can then upload to various websites. This help streamline the process and allows me to enter my ~1000 students quickly and efficiently. I would suggest, if possible, allowing for both options: generating passwords and assigning passwords. Thanks and LOVE the site!
ok
that would be wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that would be great!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
My students are doing very well!

Sincerely,
Adara
this web site should alow us to chat and put a prcile pic
i think so to wissam ;]
it would be great to be able to chat between each other!
Hello, I am a student and I introduced this website to my computer teacher. I am totally not regreting that, and I am superexcited to watch my progress stretch from horrible-to-terrific. It is truly amazing, and I will not stop using this website until my typping is perfected. Butm I know it will be, thanks to TypingWeb!
great job! keep up the good work!
I want my typing to be as perfect as possible, so I type each lesson multiple times in a row. Is it possible to repeat the lesson by using the keyboard instead of the mouse? It would be so much faster and less distracting.
Thank you for the site, it is just what I was looking for, instant feedback and fingering lessons.
Sincerely,
Gwyn
Thank you for the suggestion. I will pass your idea onto our programmers to get their input on the feature!
actully there is you press space . and your right it is a lot mor faster.
I added my classes in CSV format but they do not show up. The only one there is the “trial student” I manually added…? I thought this is free… Do I have to pay for my classes to be able to use this?
The site is free to use for an unlimited number of students, so that is not the issue. It sounds like the import did not complete the final step… Please send us an email and attach the file you used so we can troubleshoot the issue. You can email us at [email protected]
Thanks for the reply. I’m not able to do it right now but will pop it to you
ASAP.
that you dumb
i agree with wissam
im good at typing now
man this typing getting old lol i love it
I agree to
i assign user ids that identify the class and use one password so that all students can get into program as necessary and i can access each one as needed (i know i can use the portal to see their work, but sometimes i need to actually get into their “accounts”) i make user ids easy with a code for the class and the enrollees last name, they all can remember that!
well I learned how to type on this lesson and it taught me alot
starting ,a new job and that requires typing and now that I found this sight is such a blessing to me…
agree. it’s amazing!
I used the import tool with much success. The hardest part for me was making sure that everything had a comma between. I had tried importing a few times and the Tool won’t import my list because of the comma issues. I also imported about 200 students at once, so I wasn’t surprised when a few were “dropped”. My students really like it and love the “monitoring” ability while the students are on. I also like being able to see the progress of the students in each level. I just wish I could get a list of each lesson for each level. Another neat things is that you can drill down to a particular student to see what progress they are making. It was worth the effort to put my students into the free version. Try it out, I’m very sure that you will love it. This is better than a commercial version we spent $$$ for a few years ago.
Thank you for your kind words. In the future you can create your list in a spreadsheet program first, like Excel, and then just save the file as a .CSV (Comma Separated Values) file and the computer will insert the commas for you. Let us know if you ever need help or have any other questions. you can always contact us through the support form http://www.typingweb.com/support/contact/
Additional to previous post. I just found the lessons listed here: http://www.typingweb.com/portal/lessons/ . So now I have that list to reference when working with my students. This site keeps getting better and better for me.
agreed!
awesome
Not quite sure but i think it might just work. Knock your selves out.
I only had one typing class my senior year in high school in ’96 and wish it was offered more growing up. I could never get passed not looking at the keyboard. Now I am determined to teach myself to type so it can be a certified skill on my resume. My only regret is that I don’t have my own class to teach so I can play with all of the bells and whistles this site has to offer. See ya around. Thanks
Keyboarding classes are finally making a comeback in schools with the introduction of common core standards and the requirement of students to type essays instead of hand write them. Many schools could use more time to teach keyboarding, but I feel like there is a whole generation of us that missed out on learning this in school. We were the “inbetween-ers” who did not use old fashioned type writers but also did not have access to more than a single lab of computers for the entire school!
I totaly agree . Even though it hurts my hands “A LOT ” it’s still a lot of fun
I love this web page it’s very helpful :0
Great website! I just started my typing course. I’m wondering how much time does it usually take accuire good speed
That is a very hard question to answer because it is based on many different factors. The most important thing is to practice consistently (more short practice sessions are better than a few long ones) and focus on proper technique and accuracy. Speed will come over time, but only when you use the correct fingers and make few mistakes.
love it
Lol me to.
me too!!!!
this is great and i really like it love this
this website has help me in alot of way ! it easy with adhd ;P thank now its easy for me to control and put with something easy
How do I log in?.
As a student you can log in by going to our home page and clicking the Start Typing button. As a teacher you can access the teacher portal login page here: http://www.typingweb.com/portal/
good job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love typing web! But I was off for a few days and now today on March 6th, 2013…I am having problems logging in! Is anyone else having this problem? Not sure if it’s my computer or changes with the site? Help please?
Send us a support ticket and we can help reset your password (as long as you have a valid email address or are part of a teacher portal account)… http://www.typingweb.com/support/contact/
I will get a chance to send you a support ticket and stuff like that. But, I have a question for you: How do people email you the password? Like last time I was checking my email and the people are telling me to change my password and they told me to make a new password so that I can log in with it. Do they e-mail you what your password is or like they can email you the password???
If you included a valid email address in your profile we can email you a new password. If not, then there is no way for us to reset it.
this is absolutely awesome
i love typing web is better then all the other websites i get on

1) Typing Web is wonderful!!! First, A Super Success Story In The Making…
My students & clients are all adult learners, mostly EAL learners, who have loads of experience and skills, but often not keyboarding skills. As one experienced engineer said, “On my first day [at a new job], when I started with my two-finger typing, the engineer training me looked at me as if I were from the moon! Help.”
Being able to get this client started on Typing Web was a true blessing. He could DO something concrete, right away, on his own time. It was a great stress reliever.
2) HELP – Because of changes to both our Privacy and Internet security policies at work in recent months, I need to be able to log-on to Typing Web from two different email addresses, work-based and web-based. My classes are typically either small, <15, or one client/student at a time. Is this possible, or must I set up two accounts?
Unfortunately the teacher portal accounts can only have one email address associated with it at a time. You can change the current email address by editing it on the Account tab, but if you need to use two separate addresses you will need to create to two accounts.
I absolutely love the content, organization, and variety of reports available on this website! Thank you!
i used to hunt and peck but now i type fast
I type at about almost 45 wpm
I imported all the students in the school and now would like to separate them by grade. Is there any way I can just move them?
Yes, you can use the “Change Classes” button to move students into new or different classes. Be sure to create the groups first on the Classes tab. Then check the boxes next to the students you want to move on the Students tab, click “Change Classes”and pick the desired class from the drop down menu.
I play nitro type and my username is meowmeowkat and I’m a millionare too! I’m on level 32, it is fun!
i love typing web! i type at about at 32wpm!
wow
This has nothing to to do with the topic, but i just want to say thanks to FTW. Some of you may know me from the website nitrotype, and my display name is [NTM]John. Typing web made my speed rocket from 0-5wpm, to 110-120wpm. I enjoy the lessons, and for anyone who wants to be able to type over 90wpm, USE TYPING WEB!!!! It really works. Thanks FTW, you made my school life alot easier, by making me type fast! I used to take forever to type essays, but know i can type them very fast, and efficiently.
Thanks Again!
-[NTM]John
(oh, and for those of you who don’t know, [NTM] is a clan on nitrotype that stands for Nitro Type Masters. Just want to advertise that website to, which is also by FTW, and is advertised on this website, on the games page)
I just can’t get past 50-60 wpm yet I have been practicing I just haven’t improved…I guess…
