Sneak Peek: TypingWeb’s New Look, Packed with Helpful Features

Post image for Sneak Peek: TypingWeb’s New Look, Packed with Helpful Features

Here’s a sneak peek at TypingWeb’s new design, which boasts a sleek modern look, new skins, and welcome new features to enhance your TypingWeb experience. We have been working hard to gather your feedback and transform the “wish list” into a reality.

Typing Tutor Enhancements

In response to the countless requests for a better typing test, we are excited to announce that the three page test is being replaced by timed tests! Students can choose from one, three, or five minute tests, which will reduce frustration over the length of the test and stop it from freezing in between screens. Instead of switching through pages, the text will scroll to the next line automatically.

iPad users, you will be thrilled to discover that the keyboard diagram has been completely reprogrammed to work without Flash! The same goes for PC/Mac users, meaning flash is no longer a requirement for TypingWeb!

At the top of the Courses page students can now find their Statistics, detailing speed, accuracy, and time spent typing. This new location will help students better track their activity and performance throughout the course. Want more detail? Switch to Graph View (not pictured) to view up to the last 30 days individually.

Our new design isn’t just for looks. It has allowed us to reduce bandwidth requirements so TypingWeb will load up and run lightning fast (even on slow machines). Your students can spend more time typing and less time waiting for TypingWeb to load. To improve your experience even further we suggest using a fast, stable browser like Google Chrome or Firefox. Internet Explorer users, please note that we can no longer support IE7.

Teacher Portal 2.0

Over the years we have added numerous features to the Teacher Portal. Our new site design is focused on simplifying the navigation so you can easily find the features you are looking for. Whether it’s your first time logging in or you have used the portal for years, completing everyday tasks should be effortless.

One feature that many of you are looking for is the ability to customize settings and tailor the program to meet the needs of specific classes. Our goal is to offer several customizable settings in the future, but we are starting with the Classroom Scoreboard. The new setting allows you to enable the scoreboard by group, designed for teachers who find that competition benefits some classes and not others.

In the next few months we will be slowly rolling out optional early access to schools before the final product is launched to everyone. Look for the announcement about this new release and many more exciting TypingWeb improvements, coming soon!

It would be nice if a teacher had the ability to toggle games on and off so that only those students that have met the classroom requirements can go to the game room and that the teacher can use the Game room as a reward.

Just a thought.

ummmm no i think it should stay the same so the kidscan have fun as they type because if you make it like that then they will get bored typing the same stuff all the time and so they need games to keep them interested

Reply

Mrs. Telfer March 17, 2014 at 5:22 am

I agree, this would be great. I tell students to ONLY play the games that allow they to choose the Home Row, at the beginning, and NOT to play the other games until they are finished w/ the Alpha Soup N-Z lesson. I would also like the option of TURNING OFF the BACKSPACE KEY, it slows them down, and they tend to move their hands off the home row to use this key.

Great site and great updates. I have my students take the typing test during their first week of class and often many kids can’t finish it within 45 minutes due to their lack of experience and the little glitch issues, also some kids are special needs. I’m looking forward to the new test. I hope it continues to have an export results option though. I love exporting results and creating run charts each week to show how the kids are improving. Thanks for the site!

Reply

kristen November 1, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Yes, we will continue to send the stats to the portal so you can export the results and chart their progress!

I love Typing Web…it is just the website I needed for my 6th graders who are taking keyboarding for the first time. They used the computers in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade, but were never taught keyboarding skills. This website has been the best since I can check their scores at home as well as school. I can look at the progress they are making on each lesson…I love the dashboard for when they are working in the computer lab. I am able to encourage them to try just one more section of the lesson before the bell rings. Each of my students are competing against themselves…set a accuracy goal and try to beat their typing speed from the previous lesson.

I love being able to see how many sections each lesson has and I am glad the typing test is being changed to three different types. The first time my students took it, we didn’t know you had to finish it in one sitting. There were a lot of frustrated students the next day when they realized this.

I would also like to be able to block the games until they have finish the daily lesson…it would be great if we could control it from the teacher portal. I use the typing games as a reward for those students who finish early so they are not distracting those who type slower. My kids especially love Baron Typefast and the Zombie Typing game. One of my students is shorter than the others and she likes to stand up when she plays Baron Typefast so she can type the sentences faster….some of them like to compete with this game.

Thanks

Reply

British Guy December 24, 2013 at 10:59 am

Yeah, for people who think there should be more games, typing isn’t all about games. It’s about fluency and improving statistics to become the best typer in the world. Even though the games are really fun, you should try taking breaks and focus on the most important things about typing.

Thanks, British Guy.

This is really a great website and I enjoy improving my typing skills.
However, I’m a German, and used to use a German keyboard and I’m writing in English as well as in French. It is a great feature that one can change the keyboard layout and the language, however the change in language seems to only affect the presentation language, but not the words in the tests. I would really need to practice writing on the German keyboard the French accented characters, which does not seem to be able in the moment. It would be really great if the change of language could also affect the writing tests, or at least get a section for other different languages
Cheers

Oliver

Reply

kristen November 18, 2013 at 12:13 pm

You can’t turn it off, but it is important to note that our accuracy calculations do not account for corrections. We take a true accuracy calculation, so erasing and correct errors will not improve your score and will actually slow you down unnecessarily.

Reply

British Guy December 20, 2013 at 6:59 pm

Actually, it’s good because it help students learn from their mistakes and actually, it affects your WPM amount if you use the backspace button, too. ;)

i use this program with my adult learners who really like it…we do have some “glitches” like the computer not allowing us to print certification tests, insisting that we need to update our browser from IE 7—but we are using IE 8!

Reply

kristen December 17, 2013 at 12:13 pm

If you see that message and are not actually using IE7 then you must have the browser set to Compatibility View mode. Turn that off and the browser will function properly. It’s usually found under the Tools menu.

i have to say i can’t stand typing the words on the screen its just that i can type the words i think of but this is just to annoying.

Reply

Hi there “anonymous”. I think I can help…. if you look at the keyboard on the screen, its shows the letters and the hands. Look at the hands and put that finger where you think the letter is on the screen keyboard. If that doesn’t help with your frustration, just breath and be patient. You’re not going to be an expert over night.

I grade my students’ progress by how many courses they have completed with 97% accuracy or greater. I understand that the reports page gives the number of exercises completed but does not show how many courses are completed and or what % completed they are. I would love to see a customizable report option that I can make shows each student’s name, what the furthest course completed is, and their average accuracy percentage.

Reply

kristen January 16, 2014 at 10:05 am

You can run the Detailed by Lesson report for “all time” to see which lessons the students have worked on, progress/% completion, and accuracy.

I have one student that really doesn’t try very hard when she is using your typing course, and has a very low WPM rating, usually 8 or 9 WPM on most lessons, and very low accuracy; however, she still ends up passing them because it doesn’t matter how fast or accurately you type. Could you set different lessons so that you would have to type with a better accuracy level or a faster speed each time to be able to complete lessons? An example would be that Mark would have to type 20 WPM with 95% accuracy to be able to complete one lesson, but would have to type 25 WPM with 96% accuracy for other lessons as he advances.

I would also like some lessons and courses to be locked until you complete previous lessons, to prevent students from skipping around and advancing to higher courses before completing previous ones.

Reply

kristen June 5, 2014 at 12:18 pm

The program has a built in 70% accuracy minimum, but beyond that we do not currently have an option to set performance standards or to lock lessons. Our companion product, TypingAce, does offer those features. They might be something we add to TypingWeb in the future.

Reply

Brad May 4, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Which of these features are you thinking of implementing so far? I would like a list so that we could get more new ideas. For example many people are asking for more skins, if you are thinking of adding more it would be great for you to tell us so so that we can know and will stop asking. Or a pause button, or other additions or changes. Thanks!

Reply

lee May 6, 2014 at 7:29 pm

I can’t wait …. for all those features to come!I looove typing web! You should have some more challenging courses.

Reply

Debbie May 8, 2014 at 10:42 am

I’m am thinking the software I have that teachers the letters in this order, j,f,u,r,k,d,i,e and then continues to add is better than home row keys being first and that is because they are already typing many words and have three vowels to work with so there are more word combinations very early in the process. HOWEVER, I like EVERYTHING else about your site BETTER!!! It will be interesting to see the difference in my student’s grades and progress next year compared to what we are using now.

Reply

batman May 13, 2014 at 11:51 am

if you guys would submit more games more kids would want to play them, which would increase their accuracy while they play. I mean ,who dosen’t like a fun game ,which while were playing it (not realizing it) are increasing our computer literacy, which increases the probablity of us getting a good score on our typing test.:)

Thanks for making all of the sights Corndog/Austin/FTWInovations. I have a question though. I got 110 on my typing test and I am not on the hall of fame?

The Hall Of Fame is only based on typing lessons/exercises (not tests) and you must have typed at least 20 exercises in the previous week to appear.

This has been the best typing program for my 8th graders. I had some kids start out at 15 WPM who are now typing 50-60 WPM. They like the trophies. They wish there was a way to print their trophy shelf! It would also be great if some of the material they type had current relevance…current events, mention celebrities, etc.

I love this site. I went from hunting and pecking to 55 wpm in just a few months. It has helped me a lot.

Do you know when the optional roll out will occur? Also, by schools do you mean anyone with a teacher account and classes or do we have to be registered in some way as school?

I have a question, are you going to put more games on? My favorite game is http://www.typingweb.com/tutor/games/play/game/22 so you can just click on it and it can take you to the game! Please put more games like this!

TypingWeb has been absolutely awesome for our students. Thank you so much!

We can’t wait for the new look and updated features, either. Kristen, is there any status update on when these features might be rolled out?

I checked at the beginning of this school year in hopes that the new, shorter tests would be up and running like previously posted. However, I noticed they’re still not there! When are these tests going to be ready? The current test is way too long so we’re looking forward to the shorter ones!

I am as well!! I teach typing 2-6, so the shorter tests will be very helpful. I was told that it would be done by this last summer. But now they said it would be done early 2015. :( . It will be nice once it is here!

There is a Numeric Keypad Lesson in the Advanced section. You can also take the 10-key typing certification test for lots of practice.
